TCP Interactive: Applications

iTCP can be used in broad range of applications and middle layer development roughly classified in three broad classes. It can be used to build a new generation of short time-constant loop adaptive systems we call them as symbiotic applications. It can be used for evolving and extending protocols or extensible networking. It can also be used to design various cross-protocol techniques improving overall network simplicity and efficiency via cross-layer optimization.

Medianet Lab is designing novel solutions to a number of representative hard network problems from these classes.

A. iTCP offers a new paradigm of symbiotic congestion management for time sensitive elastic traffic. Symbiotic perceptual MPEG transcoders have been designed. Based on the transport layer feedback the encoder kicks in sophisticated rate adaptation mechanism for minimizing temporal disturbance.

We have derived optimum generation rate control with guaranteed TCP buffer delay. We have implemented and tested the real system for video streaming to worldwide sites and observed dramatic improvement in time-bounded video streaming.

B. Audio perception is highly susceptible to disturbance in temporal quality. In the event of congestion, audio datagrams suffer packet loss, delay, and jitter. Compressed audio appears as one of the most delicate traffic-type to handle on the Internet.

The recent advances in auditory perception promise opportunities where a perceptually clever adaptive audio system can respond to impending breakdown and support near flawless sound. The major problem until now is however receiving fast feedback from the current Internet.

The Lab has implemented a novel symbiotic audio streaming mechanism (symbiotic mp3 steam) which receives fast feedback from iTCP about congestion and responds with perceptual audio adaptation scheme. We have experimented live over the Internet and observed dramatic improvements in time-bounded audio streaming. Read more >>

C. The current solution to mobility Mobile IP (MIP) is a complex patchwork over classical IP with various intermediate software agents and indirections. MIP though offers basic connectivity to itinerant hosts but incurs significant handoff and tunneling delays along with a pre deployed agent infrastructure. These design compromises drastically undermine connection oriented applications.

Armed with iTCP we have implemented a mobility solution which uses event based cross-layer coordination mediated by T-ware named as Interactive Protocol for Mobile Networks (IPMN). IPMN provides low delay, low jitter and blazingly fast event based handoff than MIP. It paves the way for connection oriented communication on mobile network .Read more >>

D. In yet another example we demonstrated the functional modification of the TCP itself to demonstrate protocol extensibility. We picked one of the latest TCP modifications- FAST TCP. It won the 2004 Internet2 speed challenge and it fine tunes the TCP’s congestion control for newly emerging all fiber end-to-end links with low error and very high bandwidth.

We have shown how iTCP can be used to implement the equivalent scheme.

FAST TCP is known for its speed. Obviously, one of the potential concerns in placing solutions at application layer is speed. Can it be matched with Transientware? The FAST iTCP experiment has been designed to test the performance limits.
